The Minister of State for War Veterans condemns in the strongest terms the acts of vandalism perpetrated against the Etaples British military cemetery in Pas-de-Calais. This particularly shocking defacement calls for the strongest reprobation.
The international tension only makes more heinous this violation of the memory of combatants who came to liberate our land during the Second World War.
As soon as the defacement was discovered, the prefectoral authorities had informed the British consular authorities and expressed their regrets to them. Measures had immediately been taken to remove all traces of the offence. At the same time, the Public Prosecutor’s Office had launched an investigation and special surveillance was organized at the cemetery.
M. Mékachéra has asked the prefectoral authorities to organize a ceremony at the cemetery, to which he is inviting the British authorities and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission./.
