France reiterates in the strongest terms her appeal for the immediate release of President Abdallahi.
She recalls her rejection of the principle of new presidential elections in Mauritania.
France has decided to suspend, from today, her official development assistance projects in Mauritania, with the exception of the humanitarian and food aid. She is ready to look at new sanctions measures with her European Union partners.
France welcomes the African Union’s commitment and renews her full support to it. She remains determined to work closely with it and all its international partners.
France exhorts the military junta to cooperate as soon as possible with the African Union and international community to ensure the swift restoration of the constitutional order resulting from the March 2007 elections./.

France, in her national capacity, reaffirms her total condemnation of the unacceptable coup d’état in Mauritania.
She recalls the principles decreed by the African Union which utterly reject any takeover by force.
France demands the immediate release of President Abdallahi and all those detained by the military junta.
France rejects the principle of new presidential elections in Mauritania which would be illegitimate in the institutional framework established in 2007 following the transition period.
She recalls that President Abdallahi was democratically elected in March 2007. He is Mauritania’s lawful president.
France issues a firm warning to the perpetrators of the coup d’état against whom measures could be taken in the event of there not being a rapid return to constitutional legality.
France is prepared to work closely with all her partners, starting with those of the African Union and European Union, to contribute to the restoration of constitutional order in Mauritania./.
